Can I Charge My Tesla at Whole Foods

Can You Charge Your Tesla at Whole Foods? (Yes! Here’s How)

I just noticed on my last trip to Whole Foods that they have EV Charging Stations in their parking lot in front of the store. Unlike other charging stations I’ve come across thus far, these chargers were fully branded for Whole Foods.

This immediately brought up the obvious questions:

Can I charge My Tesla at this Whole Foods charging station?

Do I need to download an app or register on a website?

If I can charge my Tesla at Whole Foods, how much does it cost?

I came home, did a bit of research and put all I learned in this quick guide. Here’s everything you need to know about charging your Tesla at Whole Foods.

Can I Charge My Tesla at Whole Foods?

First off, let’s cut right to the chase. Yes, you can charge your Tesla at Whole Foods. There is a slight catch though.

Whole Foods uses ChargeHub Chargers for their Electric Vehicle Charging Stations. ChargeHub Chargers use a J1772 Connection Port.

J1772 Charging Port at Whole Foods
Whole Foods Chargers use a J1772 Charging Port which can be connected to a Tesla with a simple adapter.

This means that you can’t connect the charger directly to your Tesla’s charging port, but you can connect with the use of a Tesla J1772 Charging Adapter (you can see mine already plugged in in the pic above).

If you don’t have one of these already, I highly recommend it. This is the same style port ChargePoint stations use. ChargePoint is currently one of the most popular public charging stations. For less than $100 you can greatly expand the amount of charging stations available to you.

If you do have the adapter, charging your Tesla is as simple as opening your charging port, plugging in your charging adapter and then plugging in the Charging Station handle until you hear that satisfying ‘click’. Then I always like to double check my screen to confirm that the charger is connected and charging. That’s it!

Do I Need to Sign Up to Use a Whole Foods Charging Station?

You can sign up for a ChargeHub account and even download the app which comes in handy to help you find available charging stations near you.

However, you don’t have to sign up for anything. You don’t have to download an app. You don’t have to connect your Tesla to your Whole Foods account. There are literally no extra steps to using one of these chargers.

You can simply drive up, park, and connect your car to the charger. It couldn’t possibly be easier.

Is Whole Foods EV Charging Station Free?

The Charging Stations at Whole Foods are 100% free! The charger I connected to was a Level 2 charger and charged at a rate of 20 miles per hour.

Charging Rate of Whole Foods Station
I got 20 miles per hour of charge at the Whole Foods station I was hooked up to.

I was in Whole Foods for about a half hour and got 11 miles of charge. Obviously, you’re not going to drive off from Whole Foods with a full battery, but hey, it’s free!

For me, the amount of charge I get from a grocery trip covers the mileage to and from the store. I’ll take it.

How Long Can I Charge On a Whole Foods Charger?

I didn’t see anything on or around the charger that specified any kinds of limits, so technically, I guess as long as you want. I can’t imagine spending more than about an hour in Whole Foods, but if your Whole Foods shares a parking lot with other stores that you can hit up on your trip then I guess you could space it out a bit longer.

Final Thoughts

It’s pretty hard to beat being able to charge your Tesla for free. At my Whole Foods the chargers also happen to be a couple of the best parking spots in the lot too. Total win-win.

Just make sure you have your adapter so you can plug in while you pick up some groceries.
